“New Freedom Codes: Sit Here” is the first in a series of works that were inspired by both The Green Book and quilt codes. The idea of of symbols used to guide Black folks in America to safe spaces. Each flag represents ways that Black Americans find safety in contemporary times. “Sit Here” is representational of Black hair care spaces- beauty shops and barber shops. Places where Black hair is embraced and cared for, and where community is found.
